Erik Lehnsherr cannot let go of his past to pursue a future where humans and mutants can coexist. Though he and his best friend Charles Xavier share the belief that mutants should not live in fear, imprisonment, and exploitation, the two differ on how to achieve a future of freedom.

Erik becomes Magneto and gathers a following of fellow mutants who believe they should fight non-mutants for dominance.
